Susan Griswold is a sculptor working in architectural
materials such as steel, wood, concrete and glass. She takes inspiration from
strange or obsolete architectural elements, and uses them to explore ideas about
access. Susan often uses salvaged materials which give way gently or rudely to
narrative. Images of doorways, windows, shaftways and other unnamed apertures
are common in the work - they are open, closed, barred or boarded suggesting passage
or containment. The pieces are upward architectural structures that allude to
climb-ability. Often the structures incorporated a vessel form which can be completely
enclosed, limiting all access; or open both top and bottom, revealing the sky
up through or the ground from above. She often uses more than one vertical element,
connecting them with clear or precarious passages. Selected Group Shows:
