Susan Griswold is a sculptor working in architectural materials such as steel, wood, concrete and glass. She takes inspiration from strange or obsolete architectural elements, and uses them to explore ideas about access. Susan often uses salvaged materials which give way gently or rudely to narrative. Images of doorways, windows, shaftways and other unnamed apertures are common in the work - they are open, closed, barred or boarded suggesting passage or containment. The pieces are upward architectural structures that allude to climb-ability. Often the structures incorporated a vessel form which can be completely enclosed, limiting all access; or open both top and bottom, revealing the sky up through or the ground from above. She often uses more than one vertical element, connecting them with clear or precarious passages.
